I told you a couple of weeks ago about my hip problems. This past week, I hit another aging milestone.

I couldn't keep it up.

The site started crashing, initially from a denial of service attack. It took advantage of the fact that our users database has grown quite large and we were letting visitors go straight to one of many thousand of pages at https://oldergay.men/users. The pages were always changing because we sort, by default, on who has logged in most recently, and the database was getting overwhelmed with a flood of requests to find what's on page 2,781 now, and what's on 3,182, and...

We've been under a denial of service attack for a couple of days. I've opted to keep the site up as much as we can while combating it, though you may have found it down more than up, and you might be asked whether you're human more often. I hope we'll be squared away soon and start the week on a stable footing.

We had an influx of fake accounts this week, all of them 18 years old and with names that were jumbles of characters like "CCtsfrowjrR". I put rules in place to stop this, including checks to see whether the new member's name seems reasonable. Those checks caught some of our long-time members. 🙂 I made the rules less strict, and hopefully restored all the mistakenly banned accounts. If you found yourself banned today, please look again, and let us know if you're not properly restored. Sorry for the trouble!

I haven't posted any news about the site since the end of March, so I thought I should catch you up:

April saw the usual fixes and updates and improvements, but I had to take some time to prepare for May. As I reported to our patrons, I spent that month traveling with a very special friend with very lovely benefits. ☺️ I monitored the site along the way, but as I said when I got back:

We've reached a point at which all went well without my jumping on to fix something every day! Our site administrators took care of everything, and never had to call me in. All the pre-existing problems are still there, but it was nice to take some time without worrying about what might be wrong now.

So I'm home again, and while I miss my travel buddy like crazy, I'm happy and renewed. I dove back into work on those "pre-existing problems". You'll (fail to) notice some of them in the absence of old...

I fixed most of the problems last week; lots of new photos have gone up. I'm still working on the last stubborn ones. I'm talking directly to those of you affected, and will keep posting updates. Thanks as ever for your patience.
